We celebrated my Mom's 50th Birthday last Saturday night at my parent's house. My dad cooked steaks and Sis made an amazing chocolate cake! Here is a picture of my mom blowing out her candles and then the whole family singing (or trying to sing...some of us are tone deaf)!
Here are some fun facts about my mom:
1. She was born in Oslo, Norway; while her parents were missionaries there.
2. She was a sickly child b/c my grandmother could not stand to bury her in the snow for hours as a baby--Norway housewives bury their babies in the snow everyday so that their bodies will adjust to the cold!
3. My mom is the youngest of four--and they are all very glad she is finally 50!
4. She met and married my dad within 6 months.....and was 19! When I was 19, I don't think that would have been allowed!
6. My parents met on a bus in Houston, TX. My dad offered her his seat, and asked her out. My mom's friend told him they did not give their names to men on city buses (she was NOT a bridesmaid). My dad rode that same bus everyday for a week until he saw her again....isn't that sweet....
7. If you run into my mom on my birthday, she will tell you the story of our birthday. She cannot help this fact...even if you have heard it before...and if you haven't...you will get the long version. Short version: doctor told her she was having a big baby boy, 6 weeks before the "big baby" was due my dad went on one last fishing trip, the night before my mom's baby shower her water broke in the middle of the night, she is all alone, family is all in MS and AL, she calls her neighbor who says, "Signy, I'm dreaming....I'm hanging up." She finally wakes him up, convinces him he is not dreaming, and gets to the hospital. In the meantime, no one can find my dad.....before cell phones...and he is somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. So she delivers twins alone. My dad finally gets the news, and show up at the hospital 24 hours later in a suit, with flowers, and jewlery. The nurses chewed him out.
8. My mother is obsessed with chocolate...which is why my sister and I are obsessed....and we all three get a little mad if someone serves dessert and it's not chocolate.
9. My mom had a hot breakfast ready every morning growing up.....which means I do not function without a hot breakfast....Oliver really appreciates this one!
10. My mom loves her family and has always put us first--something I appreciate more everyday!
