Swim Time!

We had a nice long weekend here in Memphis. Elizabeth Magee and I went down to Tobie Town on Saturday for her first "swim" experience. She didn't actually get in the water or stay in the sun except to take a picture. On Sunday, we went to the Memphis Country Club and I was the delinquent parent who left my baby in a shady spot and went and laid out in the sun -- within ear sight-- but I did notice some funny looks as people walked by her and realized an infant was on the table! On Monday, we cooked out with our friends. Elizabeth Magee has learned that if she is napping, she is missing out --- and she had no desire to nap with fun people present!

14 weeks - 11.2 ounces and growing by the day! We still aren't sleeping past 5 a.m. most days but that's ok. This morning we actually got up and went running before work - Oliver and I used to run before work most mornings but this is the first time since she was born that we've all been before work!

Reasons to Smile

How beautiful is this smile? Elizabeth Magee really started smiling and "talking" to us this past weekend. By Sunday (her 13 week birthday), she was cooing along with me as I sang some silly little songs! On Monday, our nanny, Madeline was shocked at how much she had changed since the previous Thursday -- we weighed her on Monday and she weighed 11.5 oz! Her favorite place to be is in the boppy pillow sitting on the bed or the sofa --- she will smile and talk for an hour!

We have lots of reasons to smile these days. Precious Allie's surgery went great on Monday and both mama and baby are doing well! May was able to hold Allie yesterday and Allie squeezed her finger on Monday --- I cry everytime I get an update on Allie! Please remember to keep them in your prayers as they are looking to be in the hospital for another 4 to 6 weeks!

Here's another reason to smile: big girl cousins. Elizabeth Magee got to spend some good quality time with Olivia and Beckett this past weekend. Beckett is not a fan -- she refused to tolerate her Biscuit (Oliver's mother) holding Elizabeth Magee.....I'm sure they will be friends in a year but not now! Olivia on the other hand LOVED Elizabeth Magee -- or as she says, "Is-beth Gee".....so cute to hear her try to say Elizabeth Magee ---

Prayers Please

HOW BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Please say a little prayer this morning for this sweet angel, Allie. Alllie is the brand new daughter of our good friends, May and Taylor. She was born on Thursday and is having surgery today. We know that God is good and we know that He hears our prayers. May and Taylor are being incredible brave and we know that God is with their family this morning!

Here is a little bit about the surgery in May's own words:

As many of you know by now, I had an ultrasound on Tuesday to check for sufficient amniotic fluid, and they saw a suspicious fluid collection around Allie's right lung. My OB referred us to see a maternal fetal specialist Wednesday morning. We went into the appointment very optimistic, expecting him to tell us it was just a shadow or nothing of much concern. After an extensive ultrasound, the maternal fetal specialist told us that Allie had a diaphragmatic hernia on her right side. Loops of her intestine and her liver had moved up into her right lung cavity pushing her heart to the left side and obstructing her right lung from sufficiently forming. He was very concerned that once out of the womb, she would be unable to breathe and had a high chance of not surviving, even with ventilator support. You can imagine our initial shock. He informed us that we would have to have a c-section at LeBonheur with specialists of many different types assisting in the birth and initial stabilization of Allie. He wanted me to be admitted directly from his office, but as LeBonheur has no way of caring for adult patients, that was not possible. We left the doctor's office with strict instructions for bed rest and to arrive at LeBonheur at 530 the next morning (her original due date) for the delivery. I'm not sure if it was the stress from all of the news that day, or just the mere closeness of her due date, but I ended up going into labor overnight. I had never even had a single contraction up to that point. Thankfully the specialist had worked that into his intricate plan as a contingency, and he had me admitted to Methodist Germantown for stabilization prior to transfer via ambulance to LeBonheur for my scheduled C-section.
The OR was a very busy place with 2 OB's, 2 anesthesiologists, 2 neonatologists, a pediatric surgeon, 2 L&D nurses from Methodist Gtown, 2 pediatric nurses from LeBonheur, along with numerous other personnel, all with some assigned role during the procedure. I am so very thankful for each and every member of that team. The next few hours are a little hazy for me. I got to see her once she was stabilized, before they transferred her to the PICU. And to my surprise, after recovery, they rolled my bed into her room prior to my ambulance ride back to Germantown, and I got to hold her :) Her amazing nurses had decorated and bedazzled her room with her name and it was covered in pink. The bumpy ride back to Germantown with NO pain medicine, was bearable, knowing she was in such good hands.
Allie has been such a fighter and has exceeded what anyone thought she would in the last 3 days. She remains on the ventilator and while xrays have shown that some of the bowel has come down on its own, there is only about 20% of her right lung there. Her left lung and heart are functioning great, though.
The plan is for her to have surgery tomorrow morning to pull the intestines and liver down, and then repair the hole in the diaphragm, either with her own tissue or external tissue if she doesn't have enough. There are risks associated with the surgery including bleeding, infection, resultant scoliosis from abnormal muscle contraction, and the lungs could go into "shock" from the surgery and quit working. The physicians have said even if things go in our favor, we will likely be here for 4-6 weeks.
We so appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. I guess specific prayer requests at this point would be a successful surgery in the morning with no complications, no infection, a quick weaning from the ventilator once she recovers from surgery, that her intestines would work properly after surgery so that she could be transitioned to breast milk through her stomach instead of the iv nutrition she's getting now.
It is so obvious that God has been present during this difficult time from the very beginning. He has performed miracle after miracle after miracle. He blessed us with an amazing 8 lb 14 oz fighter. She is so tough! She continues to amaze the doctors and nurses every day. We are so thankful for each and every hand that has cared for us. The medical staff, both at Germantown and at LeBonheur, has been phenomenal!! We have been floored by the outpouring of support and are truly grateful to God and to you guys for helping us make it this far!

It's Official --- She Can SMILE!

After WEEKS and WEEKS of waiting -- it's official -- Elizabeth Magee can smile! It greatly distressed my grandmother, Net, when her sister's first great-grandchild (EM's 3rd cousin) started smiling WEEKS ago -- you see, these two little ones were born only a few days (and a few states) apart. They are each the respective first great grandchildren of my grandmother and great aunt. Now my grandmother and great aunt love each other --- but they have also been sisters for almost 80 years and are always trying to boss each other around and out do one another. So needless to say, the day that Ellie (EM's third cousin) started smiling, I heard about it and the follow up question was, "Is Elizabeth Magee smiling?" Which of course made me paranoid -- but she has been smiling consistently since Wednesday morning! And Net was with us Wednesday so she witnessed the cooing and smiling!

So this picture is a few weeks old -- see how tiny that baby is --but it's good of these two sisters - they are a mess!

Belated Mother's Day Post

I just read my last post and realized how AWFUL and BORING it was - I can't believe that anyone reads my blog! To read my blog you must: 1) be related to me or 2) very very bored at work!

Mother's Day was something I've been looking forward to for months and months....actually since last Mother's Day when the preacher asked all of the mothers in the congregation to stand. I remember looking at all those women and thinking, "I hope I get to stand up next year." And I did -- God is so good! That said, the last 11.5 weeks have been more challenging than Oliver and I could have imagined - worth it - but very challenging.

There is so much no one tells you about having a baby. No one tells you that your heart will break when you can't figure out why your baby is crying and you can't comfort her. No one tells you that her 8 week shots will leave her screaming for 2 minutes and you crying for 2 hours. No one tells you that you won't sleep through the night for months. No one tells you that you won't want go out on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night -- just because you can't stand the thought of someone else putting her to bed for three nights in a row. No one tells you how hard, wonderful, and amazing it is to be a mother.

My sweet friend, May, has been put on bed rest until the arrival of her little boy. No one told her how hard it was going to be just to get him here!

But I will say this, it is worth it. It is so wonderful to pick up your baby and watch her little faces. In only 11.5 weeks our world was turned upside down and shaken real hard --- and the pieces are all slowly falling back together. BUT we could not have managed without our wonderful mothers. For the first few weeks, we needed all the help we could get - and our mothers and grandmothers were there for us. Even after almost three months, our mothers are still willing to help us constantly. My sweet grandmother, Net, comes up every Tuesday afternoon and stays so that I can sleep through the night. That's love. My amazing mother has come up almost once a week -- even in the middle of kitchen renovation. Oliver's grandmother came up my first week back to work and Oliver's mom has come up several weekend nights --- we could not have survied without them!

So my very belated Mother's Day post is to say that I could not be a Mother without all the help from our Mothers and Grandmothers ---- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!

First Mother's Day

My first Mother's Day was absolutely wonderful! On the way to church I told Oliver that I hoped they asked all the mothers to stand up like they did last year. They did and it absolutely made my day! Elizabeth Magee and Oliver gave me some beautiful earrings that I've wanted for a long time.

We weighed Elizabeth Magee on Saturday and she weighed 10 1/2 pounds. She is no longer wearing newborn diapers and about half of the newborn gowns are too short/small! Oh my she is getting so big!

Oliver and Elizabeth Magee on the way to church....she smiled for Oliver FOUR different time on Mother's Day --- and not once for me ---do you think she's going to be a daddy's girl? Last night she wasn't feeling good and I was having trouble getting her to take her bottle. I finally noticed that if Oliver was in the nursery, she would eat. If he wasn't in the nursery, she wouldn't eat.

On Saturday we had a shower in honor of my dear friend May and her soon to be baby boy, Thomas Kirby Walker. Dorothy and Elizabeth Magee both wore baby blue to celebrate the occassion. Dorthoy is trying to grab Elizabeth Magee's hand in this picture --- it was so cute!

How good does May look for being 33 weeks pregnant? Her dress was REALLY cute -- not a maternity dress either!

Double Decker

There are always a lot of Great Danes at Double Decker but for some reason this year we only saw one! Elizabeth Magee is the size of his head!

Elizabeth Magee and her Uncle Thomas....you can kinda of see her dimples in this picture!

Week 10 has been both challenging and wonderful. This last week was my second week back at work and our first week with Madeline, our nanny. Madeline is an answer to prayer and overqualified to keep Elizabeth Magee. There is language barrier and it is a little hard to communicate. Madeline is a refugee from Rwanda and speaks French. I think that she will be wonderful and our communication will only get better! We also experienced terrible storms Tuesday night - which knocked our power out until Thursday at 4 p.m. We spent our first night away from home on Wednesday night -- thank goodness for May and Patrick who opened their hometo us. We don't travel light these days and between baby and dog we are not the perfect houseguests! By Friday, Oliver and I were both exhausted and needed small (ok really big) attitude adjustments. Its hard to be upbeat and happy all the time without much sleep but we are so blessed to have such good friends and family to help us!

We have been completely restored this weekend after a wonderful mini-trip to Oxford. Double Decker weekend has always been one of my favorite weekends in Oxford and this year the weather was absolutely perfect. It turns out that leaving home Wednesday night was good practice for packing up Friday night. My sweet freshman year roommate, Jill, has moved to Oxford with her family. They were at the beach this weekend but let us stay at their house. I don't think we could have managed to go down and come back in one day! We got to Oxford around 9 Friday night and the baby slept almost a solid 6 hours. A HUGE BLESSING! On Saturday morning, we got up and went to my favorite place Bottletree Bakery for breakfast. If someone told me I could eat at the nicest, most expensive restaurant in Oxford or Bottletree -- I'd pick Bottletree. Everytime. Elizabeth Magee slept through our entire breakfast so we got to enjoy every single bite! Then, we went to Oliver's aunt and uncle's house right off the square to give Elizabeth Magee her breakfast. It was so nice being able to use their house as home base....I don't think we would have survived the day without them! Elizabeth Magee ate up all the attention and was a perfect angel for all of Double Decker. Aunt Karen was also an angel and offered to watch her while Oliver and I enjoyed some of Double Decker alone.....
